RNA Super Bowl Party!

Riverview Neighborhood Association invites you to bring your friends and neighbors out on Super Bowl Sunday (February 5th) to watch the Giants take on the Patriots in a rematch of the 2008 classic.  It’s a chance to meet some new people, and support a new local business – The Trolley Car Bar & Grill (Palisade & Ferry).  Join us anytime from from about 6PM until the game concludes (or the celebration ends).  Cash Bar.

Resolve to Improve Your Neighborhood in 2012

Riverview Neighborhood Association wishes you a healthy and Happy New Year. We thank all of you who participated in RNA in 2011 and invite everyone to be a part of improving the quality of life and creating community here in our part of Jersey City in 2012.

Our theme for 2012 is to honor the spirit of founding member Maria Tuzzo, who passed away in December, by engaging everyone to take small steps that add up to significant improvement in the community. Despite Maria’s numerous health issues, she never complained and still contributed to the community by volunteering an hour here and there to mail out our newsletter, or spend time with the Harbor View residents. While she was as frustrated as any of us with the shortcomings in many city services, it did not stop her from doing what she could. While we won’t stop advocating for improvements in government services, we will also do what we can on our own to make a difference – whether it be picking up litter, or offering entertainment in the park.

On Tuesday, January 10th, at our monthly meeting, we welcome you to share your ideas with RNA members on how we can improve the community. This can include specific activities, programs, events, advocacy, partnership outreach or other ideas that we accomplish together in 2012.

In keeping with our 2012 theme, please bring an unopened toiletry item to the meeting (toothpaste, tooth brush, shaving cream, deodorant, sanitary napkins, tampons, soap) that will be donated to St. Lucy’s shelter.

The meeting will begin at 7:30PM at the Harbor View Health Center, 178 Ogden Avenue (corner of Franklin). All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

RNA Holiday Party – Tuesday, Dec. 13th

Everyone is invited to join RNA on Tuesday, December 13th at 7PM at the Harbor View Health Center, 178 Ogden Ave (at Franklin) as we celebrate the holidays together.  This year’s celebration is bittersweet as we will hold our first holiday party without our stalwart, Maria Tuzzo, who died on Dec. 4th. Please join us in paying tribute to Maria, share a meal together (no charge) and listen to the McNair High School Glee Club.  Please bring a non-perishable food item with you for our food drive or a dessert to share with your neighbors (if you can).

RNA Is Participating in the Big Dig on Oct 22nd

RNA is a member of the Jersey City Parks Coalition (JCPC). The JCPC and the City of Jersey City are sponsoring the Big Dig, as part of national Make A Difference Day.  Our part will be to plant about 400 flower bulbs in Riverview-Fisk Park and Janet Moore Park – just some of the over 15,000 bulbs that will be planted city-wide in parks and public spaces.

Please volunteer! We start at 9AM and go until about noon on Saturday, Oct. 22nd.  We will have some tools, but if you have any bulb planters, trowel, spades or pitch forks, please bring them.  Students can receive community service credit.  For more information please email us at riverviewneighborhood@comcast.net.

99S Bus Service to Continue as Route 119

Starting on November 7th, NJ Transit will takeover the 99S bus line from Coach USA/Red & Tan and have Academy Bus operate the line for them as route 119.  Facing a loss of NYC bus service along Central Avenue and Kennedy Blvd south of Journal Sq, this is good news.  As the service will be run by NJ Transit, it is expected to accept the Monthly Pass enabling riders to use their pass on any NJT bus and the Light Rail.  The drawbacks? Service will run only from 5AM-10AM and 3PM -10PM to/from NYC.  Between 10AM and 3PM local service only will be provided on Central Ave by the 88 bus.  South of Journal Sq. local riders should use the #10 bus as the 119 will only pick up NYC passengers.  Schedules, rates and other details are expected to be published by the end of this week.
